This brief provides an overview of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the likelihood of the virus spreading, the potential disruption any further spread may cause and the global response to the disease. The author argues that the successful containment of Ebola is in large part contingent on the ability of international actors to act fast – and in concert – to ensure that the spread of the virus is effectively halted.
