This paper looks at the implications of mega-regional free trade agreements, such as Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), for the global trading system as well as countries who will not be members of such agreements, particularly South Africa. To inform their discussion on these issues, the authors also 1) provide a definition of what constitutes a mega-regional trade agreement; 2) outline the principle regulatory areas that could be covered the TTIP and the TPP; and 3) look at potential scenarios for the outcomes of the TTIP and TPP negotiations.
