This brief examines Russia's foreign policy towards Central Asia suggesting that it attempts to foster minimum levels of stability in the region while also seeking to expand its political and economic influence. The authors also discuss Russia's reaction to the influence of other powers (such as China and the US) in Central Asia, and contend that Moscow has worked to minimize the challenges this influence could pose to its interests there.
