This report initially focuses on the root causes of Northeast Asia’s three maritime disputes – the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands, and the Southern Kurils/Northern Territories – with a particular emphasis on events that have occurred since the late 2000s. The report then switches gears and highlights possible ways forward, primarily via existing and emerging forms of maritime cooperation.
