This commentary addresses the decline in defense spending in the EU 28 countries which occurred between the 2008 financial crisis and 2014. The author notes that the worsening security outlook in the EU’s neighborhoods in 2014 has caused many EU member states to once again increase their spending in 2015. She welcomes this reversal arguing that while war between EU members has become unthinkable, maintaining a strong military to deal with potential hostility from states outside of the Union would be a wise choice.
