With the five BRICS countries continuing to expand and institutionalize their cooperation on key international issues in an attempt to further increase their global clout, this brief assesses the EU’s response to their rise. The author contends that in spite of the progress which the BRICS have made regarding the forging of new global institutions, cracks are beginning to appear within the group over key economic issues. He also discusses whether the EU should treat the BRICS as countries individually or as a whole when it comes to responding to their rise.
