This paper assesses the activities and performance of provincial foreign direct investment promotion agencies (IPAs) in South Africa. The author argues that even though some IPAs perform well in attracting and facilitating foreign investment, there is a lack of coordination between them. Consequently, he recommends that South Africa’s national investment agency (TISA) provide more strategic oversight over provincial IPAs. He also suggests that IPAs improve coordination between them in order to help the South African government ensure more sustainable investments.
