This paper looks at South Africa's coastal governance frameworks, institutions and environmental regulations and examines how approaches to the use, development and protection of coastal areas in South Africa have evolved over time. In particular, the author highlights how South Africa's approach to coastal management has moved away from focusing on ecological sustainability and toward supporting the country's broader socioeconomic agenda, something which involves attempting to balance the development, use and protection of the coastal environment. She also uses a case study of coastal management in South Africa’s Eastern Cape to illustrate potential shortfalls in the practical application of South Africa's approach.
