This report examines both the impact and effectiveness of EU sanctions targeted against specific nations. More specifically, the report's authors assess 1) the conditions under which sanctions are likely to be effective; 2) the economic impact EU trade and financial sanctions have had against Russia, including those that Brussels applied in the wake of Moscow's 2014 aggression against Ukraine; 3) the economic impact of EU sanctions against Iran; 4) why nuclear-related international sanctions against Iran have had a greater affect than previous ones; and 5) the limitations of EU sanctions against the Assad regime in Syria.
