On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) on women, peace and security, this brief reviews how well the European Union has implemented its provisions. More specifically, the brief’s author discusses 1) the EU’s efforts to incorporate the values of the UNSCR 1325 into its foreign policy and Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP); 2) the continuing lack of meaningful female representation in peace and security initiatives in the EU and elsewhere; 3) the obstacles to the effective implementation of UNSCR 1325, including the lack of reliable data on gender-based violence; and 4) how the EU can help expand the role women play in peace and security.
