This paper focuses on the alleged 'malaise' afflicting African institutions. To solve this problem, the continent needs institutional designs that are 1) responsive to local contexts, 2) adaptable to changing circumstances, and 3) reflect commonly held aspirations. The text's author also argues that Africa needs a new generation of leaders that will foster greater civic engagement and rely on civil society to serve as both a watchdog and ethical guardian of society.
