This paper focuses on the roles played by Chinese agricultural investors in Africa over the past decade. In particular, the paper 1) contrasts China's mostly aid-focused approach to African agriculture in the 20th century with the investment-centered tack it has adopted more recently; and 2) investigates the combined motives, diverse actors and different modalities that are involved in an investment-centered approach.
