This Issue Alert examines how successful the EU has been in implementing “gender mainstreaming” and achieving greater gender balance in its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations. The text’s author concludes that 1) ensuring women’s participation in CSDP crisis management operations remains a major challenge, particularly in military operations, and 2) attempts to promote gender equality at the EU-level alone are insufficient. They will only succeed in conjunction with member states’ efforts.
