This Alert discusses how over the past decade West Africa has become an increasingly important gateway for the smuggling of illicit drugs (mainly cocaine) from Latin America to Europe. Indeed, given Europe’s demand for high-value drugs, there is a risk that smuggling activities in West Africa will intensify. The Alert closes by highlighting some of the responses to this problem that EU policy makers might want to adopt, including buttressing up the weak law enforcement mechanisms that exist in this part of Africa.
