Given the interests at stake, this brief explains why there’s a real danger of escalating tensions in the South and East China Seas. The brief's author specifically argues that 1) the maritime disputes in both seas will not be resolved via international law, at least not anytime soon; 2) the US-China rivalry lies at the core of the regions’ current disputes; and 3) Europe’s engagement in Asia needs to match the level of its interests.
