This brief reviews the strategic relationship between the European Union and the African Union almost ten years after the signing of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy. The latter was designed to transcend the donor-recipient dynamic between the two institutions and promote a more equal partnership between them and also other regional actors. The brief's author concludes that the two institutions have indeed become increasingly interdependent, particularly in the security domain. It's in this area that the AU has reached a level of activity that makes it an essential player on the African continent.
