This paper reviews Turkey’s fraught attempts to join the EU, particularly since Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s rise to power in 2003. The text’s author specifically argues that the accession process has now lost its credibility – i.e., neither side believes in it anymore. As a result, the time may be right for the EU to redefine its relationship with Ankara. For example, it might want to reengage on an economic level, which is an area where EU soft power seemingly still exists.
