This report looks at trends that could have some of the most far-reaching impacts on Africa’s economy, politics and security in the years to come. More specifically, the six essays in this report look at 1) the disappearance of the continent’s ageing and long-standing rulers; 2) Africa’s expanding youth population; 3) resource depletion and land pressures across the continent; 4) diverging patterns of growth and inequality; 5) Africa’s ‘multi-layered’ security environment and its capacity to manage it; and 6) religious extremism and its role as a catalyst for violent political mobilization on the continent.
