This paper analyzes Turkey’s primary objectives in Syria and assesses the political complications they raise. To cite one example, Ankara still aspires to overthrow President Assad even though the Western powers view the goal as an unnecessary complication in the fight against ISIS. In another instance, Turkey’s desire to prevent the emergence of a Kurdish political entity faces similar opposition from the West, primarily because the Kurdish YPG enjoys considerable support from both the United States and Russia.
