Farmer-pastoralist conflicts, nor the proposed solutions to solve them, are new to Tanzania. The ongoing problem lies with the evictions that occurred during the country’s colonial and post-colonial period, and the limitations of the formal land dispute settlement mechanisms that are currently in place. Maybe the necessary next-step solution, argues the author of this paper, is to introduce a mechanism that relies on the popular participation of actual victims.
