This Alert contends that while the US is using the Trans-Pacific-Partnership (TPP) agreement to solidify its position in the Asia-Pacific region, China is using its One Belt One Road initiative to spread loans, investments and high-technology in the Middle East. Indeed, since 2014 Beijing has signed three comprehensive strategic partnership agreements with Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt and another five strategic partnership agreements with other countries in the region. Oh, there are also three other pacts pending.
