This paper discusses conditions in Turkmenistan under the dictatorship of President Saparmurat Niyazov. It reviews Turkmenistan's demographics, history, geography, economy and foreign relations. The author argues that President Niyazov's rule has inflicted great harm on Turkmenistan while the international community idly stands by. Russia, the author argues, has put up with President Niyazov because of financial convenience. The paper concludes by urging the international community to engage with President Niyazov to push for reform.
