The publication presents unpublished material on the Russian withdrawal strategy from Afghanistan to offer clear lessons for US-led coalition forces. The author examines phased withdrawal, conflict resolution and state reconstruction based on Russian memoirs, individual monographs and an array of declassified materials. It concludes that the Soviet approach between 1985 and 1989 offers positive and negative lessons.
