This publication examines the threat posed to internal stability in Ukraine as a result of a split within one of the main political parties. The author argues that defection of the Socialist Party leader Oleksandr Moroz is understandable because his bid to become speaker in parliament was blocked by members of his own party but that his action is in defiance of electoral commitments. The publication concludes that these events play into the hands of Russia who remains committed to blocking Ukraine’s entry to NATO.
