Nov 2004

This publication examines a political crisis that unfolded in Ukraine as a result of the contested outcome of presidential elections. The author argues that the Supreme Court’s decision to accept an appeal from one of the candidates and adjudicate on the legality of the elections has caused some supporters to switch sides. The publication concludes that Russian interference has increased the risk of a violent outcome and that the language used by one of the candidates seeks to legitimize the use of force to find a solution.
