This publication examines conflict in Moldova in the context of nationalist ferment over matters of language, culture and identity. The author argues that these factors and others relating to ideology and ethnicity may be a characteristic of borderland states and not isolated to Moldova. The publication concludes that the conflict in Transnistria is likely to persist as is the Russian presence due to its strategic and geo-political concerns in the region.
