Nov 2000

This publication examines the politicians and political parties participating in Romanian parliamentary and presidential elections. The author argues that the number of competing parties is not conducive to government stability and the indications are that the ex-communist former president Ion Iliescu will be re-elected. The publication concludes that if the current Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu manages to win the presidential contest the chance of implementing lasting government reform and greater transparency in Romanian politics can be realized.
