This paper discusses the current state of cyber security and policies in Africa, with a specific focus on Kenya and South Africa. More specifically, the author analyzes 1) Kenya and South Africa’s cyber policies, highlighting how African countries are no exception when it comes to the global decline in Internet freedoms; and 2) how technological advances could ultimately improve governmental accountability. The paper concludes by arguing that countries should adopt middle ground approach towards cyber policies, between the need for Internet freedoms, on the one hand, and efforts to protect citizens and companies against crime, on the other.
