This article focuses om the EU's ‘insurance mechanism’, which is designed to re-introduce visa requirements quickly and easily if migration flows into Europe get out of control or a partner nation reneges on its visa reform commitments. But how feasible is it for the EU to trigger the mechanism or even resist doing so? This text grapples with these questions and more.
