This paper maps unresolved bilateral problems in relations between Western Balkan countries as well as the EU’s regional influence. Key insights include 1) aspiring EU members must resolve outstanding disputes, something which has proved a powerful resolution tool over the years; 2) the resolution of bilateral issues, including border disputes, is crucial in the Western Balkans, where they are numerous; 3) recent action has weakened trust in the EU in the Western Balkans; 4) this is concerning as should EU influence wane, nationalist leaders could exacerbate tensions in the region; 5) consequently, the EU should demonstrate its commitment through encouraging dispute resolution.
