This short text addresses Chinese infrastructure investment in the Western Balkans. After briefly reviewing the impact of recent Chinese investment projects in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the authors contend 1) that Beijing's model of infrastructure investment is exacerbating the high levels of corruption that exist in the Western Balkans; and 2) that Chinese infrastructure projects frequently serve as a conduit for political and normative influence.
