Since coming to power, the Putin administration has systematically cracked on Russian press freedoms. After taking control of the main nationwide television networks in 2003, the authorities have now taken over the most important non-state controlled newspapers. Th e regional media and Internet are next. Ultimately, the silencing of critical voices will undermine Putin's stated eff orts to strengthen the Russian state and boost the economy.
