Obama Talks Counterterrorism

Why was President Obama's recent speech on counterterrorism so important? Three reasons--it laid out America's future counterterrorism strategy; it provided a three-dimensional history on the 'war' against al Qaeda; and it firmly aligned the US' views on counterterrorism with those of Europe.

Normally, we provide analyses of the news on our website rather than provide the news itself. Today, however, we thought it best to repeat President Obama’s 23 May speech at the National Defense University in Washington, DC. The speech, after all, 1) provides a comprehensive framework for America’s future counterterrorism strategy; 2) presents the most expansive examination of the ‘war’ against al Qaeda and its allies ever shared by a senior US official; and 3) lays the political groundwork to wind down this ‘war’ after 12 long years. America, in short, will no longer be on a boundless perpetual wartime footing.” Instead, it will join its allies in managing a problem rather than confronting an existential threat.
