This study explores the United States' long-standing interest in preventing the rise of a hegemonic power on the Eurasian land mass. In order to prevent this possibility from happening, the text’s author calls for major changes in the US’ current defense posture, including 1) adopting a more forward presence; 2) according top priority, in deed as well as word, to the Western Pacific theater; 3) taking on greater risks in the European and Middle Eastern theaters; 4) emphasizing new concepts of operation and different divisions of labor between Washington and its allies; and 5) paying more attention to the strategic communications dimensions of strategy.
