This monograph addresses the challenges to US military power projection by anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) strategies by Iran. Iran will pursue an asymmetric "hybrid" A2/AD strategy, mixing advanced technology with guerrilla tactics to deny US forces basing access and maritime freedom of maneuver. The authors propose three strategies to counter the Iranian strategy and regain military freedom of action: 1) Setting conditions to deter or defeat Iranian coercion and aggression, with US forces supporting operations from outside the reach of its anti-access threats; 2) Operating from range to reduce the effectiveness of Iran’s strategy; and 3) establishing localized superiority when and where needed.
