This paper provides insights into how women are beginning to play a bigger role in shaping the politics of Islamist political movements in the Middle East. Based on interviews conducted with women belonging to Hizbollah in Lebanon and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as well as conversations with women Islamic activists in Morocco, Kuwait, and other countries, the authors argue that although the outcome of these on-going debates is still unpredictable, it is certain that women’s political activism in Islamist movements is a growing phenomenon that needs to be watched carefully.
