This paper sheds light on the past and projected growth of Arab and other emerging economies' sovereign wealth funds (SWFs). It is argued that, rather than the absolute size of these funds, it is their rapid shift from the periphery to the center of global financial markets and the speed by which they have joined the ranks of other significant investor classes that have moved them into the global public space. As a result, Arab sovereign wealth fund managers have become increasingly sophisticated as global investors, managing complex international portfolios.
