This paper analyzes the state of the Russian defense industry at the turn of the 21st century. The author looks at the development of the Russian defense industry since the collapse of the Soviet Union and tracks the various reorganization and reconfiguration processes. The paper states that the Russian defense industry has been politically marginalized and has failed to become either a role model for economic recovery or a motor for technological innovation in the civilian industry.
