This paper provides an analysis of the effect that the Turkish Government’s crackdown on internal protests is having on the country’s accession negotiations with the EU. The author explains that Germany, Austria and the Netherlands were keen to fire a warning shot across the bows of Ankara while at the same time keeping Turkey, a strategically important country and NATO stalwart, on board.
