This commentary talks about the renewal of talks regarding Turkey’s accession to the EU. It argues that even though there is still criticism of Turkey’s poor human rights record by the EU, there is also an awareness of the need to keep Turkey on board and for Erdogan to be motivated to look west rather than elsewhere. The author discusses the democratization reforms in Turkey, including new Kurdish reforms and a reversal of the headscarf ban. He also examines the position of individual EU states on Turkey’s potential membership of the EU.
