This commentary examines the Shah Deniz Consortium's (SDC) decision to use the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) - instead of Nabucco-West as favoured by the European Commission - to transport gas from Azerbaijan to Europe. The authors compare the economic and political features of the two pipelines and conclude that TAP’s triumph over Nabucco is an example of private business motivations and national actors pursuing their own energy security interests.
