Talking from a Spanish perspective, this authors of this paper argue that the origins of the euro crisis lie in the defective design of a monetary union created hastily without the proper political, monetary or fiscal institutions to support it. To be effective, the financial system needs a thorough restructuring. Partial solutions, they feel, will only aggravate the crisis.
