This report suggests that it is time for the US Department of Defense and the US Congress to review the combat air forces that it will need to sustain its asymmetric airpower advantage. In particular, the author argues that in the current age of austerity, precedence should be given to fielding new long-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and strike aircraft that will bolster the US military’s Asia-Pacific posture and enable it to project power rapidly when and where it is needed.
