This commentary describes the importance of tourism in Spain as the most flourishing sector of the country's otherwise ailing domestic economy since the economic recession started in 2009. The author provides an overview of the beginnings of mass tourism in Spain in 1939 until 2013 and points out that despite the boom in the labor-intensive tourism sector, the employment shortfall caused by the economic recession cannot be made up entirely by tourism.
