With Burundi's 2015 general elections in mind, this report examines the country's political environment and the factors that have contributed to its emerging political crisis. The author suggests that frictions between the main political actors in the country stem from government actions which have prevented the opposition and civil society from operating freely. She also suggests that attempts by the ruling party to allow President Pierre Nkurunziza to run for a third time, in violation of the constitution, have raised concerns about the democratic future of the country. Finally, she examines how growing political tensions could affect the stability and security of Burundi.
