This paper proposes a strategy for how the US can restore its global power projection capability to improve stability, bolster allied confidence in US security commitments, strengthen conventional deterrence, and reduce operational risk in the event of war. The author first examines the lessons Washington can learn from its strategies in the 1950s and the 1970s to address wide ranging security threats in times of declining defense budgets. He then outlines the operational and strategic shortcomings of the current US approach to power projection, explains the key elements of the strategy he suggests the US should adopt, and discusses how it could be implemented.
