This testimony discusses what the US can learn from its 1950s and 1970s strategies to offset the threat posed by the size of Soviet Union's conventional force and its satellites to help Washington deal with the challenges it faces in 2014. The author also lays out what form of strategy the US should adopt so that it can effectively project its power, deter potential adversaries and reassure allies and friends in light of the growth of anti-access/area-denial capabilities by China and other prospective adversaries around the world.
