In this speech transcript, the CSBA's Mark Gunzinger puts forward his ideas on how the US can maintain its advantage when it comes to future long range strike bomber (LRS-B) capability. The author explores two competition areas and explains how changes in each are driving the need for the US military to alter its operational concepts and precision strike capability priorities. These areas are 1) the “hiders versus finders” competition, which refers to capabilities that enable aircraft to “hide” as they enter contested areas and the development of defensive systems to “find” aircraft belonging to adversaries; and 2) the precision strike “salvo competition” which occurs between enemies that are each prepared to conduct high-volume offensive strikes as well as defend against their opponent’s precision strikes. He concludes by addressing several factors that could impact the timely fielding of any new LRS-B.
