This paper focuses on the role women play in the Algerian military. More specifically, it argues that even though the Algerian People's National Army (PNA) portrays itself as a progressive, equal opportunity institution, in practice there is no equality and the integration of women remains limited in scope. To support her point, the paper's author elaborates on the historical role of women in the Algerian military and provides current examples of their unequal status (the representation of female soldiers in the official PNA magazine is marginal and contradictory; the army’s traditional gender-based divisions of labor remain in place; the PNA continues to prevent women from performing combat roles, etc.).
