This paper describes the evolution of the grassroots "Hirak" movement, which had its roots in a revolt of Jordanian military veterans and lasted from 2011-2013. The paper’s author explains that the group is increasingly being remembered as a social and political protest movement that was born out of 1) the discontent of those living in the East Bank hinterlands, and 2) King Abdullah II's neoliberal economic reforms and his stance on the Palestine question.
